HUE IT YOURSELF: 10 TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME’S CURB APPEAL

March 21, 2019

Earlier this month we had the opportunity to hang out at the Buffalo Home Show, met a lot of new people AND got to share some helpful DIY hints up on stage - Vern Yip from TLC's Trading Spaces even opened for us! 🤣  In case you missed it, we wanted share our DIY tips with you too -

1. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR

Add a pop of color by giving your front door new life with a fresh coat of paint. For the best results, use exterior flat or eggshell paint. Coral (Pantone color of the year, btw!), rust, turquoise, and plum are just a few of the “in” colors for 2019.

2. HARDWARE UPGRADE

Install a new house number or door lockset for a new look. Oil-bronze and antique brass finishes suit traditional homes well while brushed nickel give a contemporary look.

3. BRIGHT IDEAS

Upgrade your porch light or add some garden lights. If it's impossible to install wired lighting, solar lighting is great alternative to illuminate a pathway or accent different features of your home.

4. CREATING BALANCE

Adding symmetrical light fixtures, plants and other accents to your front porch is easy to do and eye pleasing.  For some extra pops of color - add your address or other customization to your planters!

5. HOLD ON FOR ONE MORE DAY

Porch railings can deteriorate quickly if not treated properly. Look for quality components when upgrading your railings.  While pressure treated wood has a typical lifespan of 15 years, vinyl railings can last 30 years (and many can be purchased with a lifetime warranty!).

6. WALK THIS WAY

Adding a walkway makes your home feel more warm and welcoming. Replace a straight path with contoured brick or stone. Brick pavers create a classic look for a much more affordable cost than concrete.

7. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?

Save on space by creating container gardens. Add color with flowers, veggies or herbs.

Peppers only need a 16" pot to grow, while vining vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes and peas only need a 20" space.

Rosemary, thyme, sage, and oregano can all be planted together, as they all like drier spaces. While basil, parsley, and cilantro can grow together with more moisture.  Make sure you plant mint separate, it can overrun the entire pot!

8. SPRING CLEANING

Pulling weeds, pruning shrubs, and adding new mulch can give new life to your planter beds.  Mulch fades over time and by adding a few new bags each year, it can give your whole yard a much cleaner look.

9. A WORK OF ART

Wind chimes, birdbaths, and metal sculptures are all sure to add a little spunk and personality to your outdoor space.  Wanna add some pizzazz to your front stoop? Layer a 3' x 5' rug under your welcome mat to create a stylish new look for your front door!
